CHAPTER 13

Michael avoided Cora’s eyes when he came downstairs, and he flopped on the couch, arm over his eyes, not sure if he wanted to blot out the last five minutes or burn them into his memory. Angry as Ellie had been, she’d also been naked. A light smattering of freckles covered her shoulders and arms, and her skin was soft and radiant from the rainfall. Her waist curved into a slight hourglass, accentuated by the swell of her breasts and round hips. And something about that outie belly button made him want to swirl his tongue around it and make her squeal. God, he wanted her, but not like that. She’d just been wearing that thin layer, no bra or panties, and he became keenly aware that he had nothing on under his shorts either.

It was too hot to hide under a throw blanket, so he set one of the cylindrical pillows over his hips, and prayed Cora wouldn’t comment. It probably didn’t matter, considering how gloomy everything was. They didn’t have candles down here, it was too dark to read, and Cora busied herself testing used batteries in puck lights they’d found in the house. They’d put a puck light in each bathroom, so people could see. They’d been lucky not to have a major accident.

“Thanks for not taking advantage,” Cora said, breaking the silence. A puck light clicked, illuminating her face, but she turned it off again and set it aside.

“You heard that?” he asked.

Cora huffed in amusement. That meant everyone in the house had heard, including Dawson.

“She’s really stressed about… It’s not just her job. She feels like everyone’s future is riding on her shoulders,” Cora said, keeping her voice soft. “And Mr. Dawson has been kind of tearing her down since she stopped flirting back.”

“I don’t think that stress is going away,” Michael said, feeling a twinge of jealousy as the blood rushed to his face. His fists clenched and fire shot through his loins, making him feel like a primal animal fighting for a mate.

“I think you’d be great for her if circumstances were different,” Cora continued. “You know, that perfect world where you don’t have to worry about crossover office-dating politics. I’m the one who ingrained into her the ‘don’t date coworkers’ policy.”

Michael pushed onto his elbows, looking over the back of the couch to see her. A dim puck light lit the underside of her face, casting long shadows over her cheeks and forehead as she rooted through the battery stack for functional AAs.

“Burned by the politics?” he asked.

“My last boss,” she said, her nose wrinkling at the memory. She tucked a strand of her dark hair behind her ear and stirred the bowl of dead batteries, as if new ones would surface. “In the beginning, we made people uncomfortable because we were sickly sweet and I got all these favors. Then people would try to get favors through me, or try to get to the boss through me.”

“I’m not even dating my boss and people think they can win his favor by being nice to me,” Michael said.
